Honoring both victims and heroic rescuers

Part of the ongoing Ninth Meet in Beijing arts festival, a large-sized oil painting, Utmost Fortitude - Memories of May 2008, will soon be on display at the Capital Museum to commemorate the first anniversary of the Sichuan earthquake.

Consisting of six themes, it portrays victims' terror and helplessness in the face of ruin and death - but also their heartfelt gratitude for those who offered their hand of friendship to the quake zone.

It pays tribute to the soldiers, international rescue teams and medical staff, who greatly contributed to the rescue and relief work, and also shows people across the country banding together in the reconstruction of the disaster area.

The scroll is 51.2 m wide and 2.28 m in height, symbolizing the day, May 12, and the time, 2:28 pm, when the catastrophic earthquake struck and claimed thousands of lives. It is jointly created by 86 artists at home and abroad, including Jin Shangyi, Chen Danqing, Shao Dazhen and Shang Ding.
