Some 31 percent of women said the men in Germany were better looking than anywhere else. Croatian women scored 37 percent with British men.

The survey also found that Britons scored best on knowledge of world cities, flags and landmarks -- they scored an average 65 percent in a test compared with 52 percent for Germany, 46 percent for Spain, 41 percent for France and 32 percent for Italy.

The online survey of 5,000 European adults -- 1,000 each from Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain -- was conducted for Internet holiday firm lastminute.com.
