Return of ads in TV dramas controversial

China Daily | Updated: 2015-08-12 07:45

RECENTLY the China TV Drama Production Industry Association suggested to the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television that it should allow commercial advertisements to be broadcast during TV dramas, which has drawn public concern. Comment:

An industry association has the right to speak for the interests of its own industry. But the TV industry is probably unaware of the root cause of its crisis. Currently, the Internet is making great endeavors to attract audiences. If the TV stations resume telecasting ads that break into TV dramas, it may accelerate the exodus of TV audiences.

Chinese Business View, Aug 10

The intention of the film and TV authorities in banning ads during TV dramas was to propel reform of the industry. To survive the severe competition, the TV companies should find new growth engines and improve the quality of their programs, rather than solely relying on ads. Even if advertisements are broadcast in the middle of TV dramas, it will not help save the traditional TV industry.

Henan Business Daily, Aug 10

We should tolerate the resum-ption of ads during the broadcasting of TV dramas, especially when the traditional TV industry is seriously challenged by new media. It's a proper demand of the TV industry. Moreover, only when all the interests and voices compete on the same fair, just and open stage, could we make the most reasonable decision and maximize the benefits of various parties.
