The process of building an operational aircraft carrier
Step 1: Designing and equipment outfitting
After Varyag was purchased from Ukraine, it underwent a long refit. Transforming the aircraft carrier demands new knowledge, technology and materials, such as comprehensive designs, engines and radars. Developing these technological capacities needs the support of the entire country.
In the process of equipment outfitting, the equipment was installed on the aircraft carrier. The equipment included the catapult, necessary electronic gear, the weapons system, the command system, and living facilities.
Step 2: Testing
In August 2011, the aircraft carrier underwent its first trial, and in August this year, it had finished 10 trials. An important component of the trials was testing the steel cables used to catch the aircraft and decelerate them upon landing. The cables can bring an aircraft with a speed of 300 kilometers per hour to a full stop in a short distance.
Catapults may also be tested to see whether they can propel various types of aircraft off the deck.
Another task is testing communication between the carrier and aircraft, and whether the navigation system will lead the aircraft to their designated locations.
Step 3: Training
After the carrier comes into service, it should finish the process of training, including individual training and team training that involves the matching of aircraft and the carrier. It will undergo a long process of cooperation training with other escort ships and supply ships.
