Haute French cuisine

French chef Yannick Allno reinterprets traditions and explores French cuisine in a fun and interactive setting at his newly opened restaurant S.T.A.Y., at Shangri-La Hotel Beijing. The chef, who has five Michelin stars for two of his restaurants, handpicked a new culinary and service team for the restaurant. The a la carte menu includes lobster fine tart with baby spinach salad, black codfish in seaweed butter, duck a la royal with buttered tagliatelle. The restaurant opens for lunch and dinner from Tuesday-Saturday, for brunch on Sunday, but is closed on Monday.

New Cantonese menu

Chef Chi Ping-xu has been appointed new executive chef at The Peninsula Beijing. He is responsible for Jing, an innovative "modern meets Asian" restaurant, and Huang Ting, a Chinese restaurant serving Cantonese cuisine and dim sum. Xu was with The Peninsula Shanghai as executive sous chef before moving to Beijing. He has prepared new dim sum menu at the hotel's popular Huang Ting Cantonese restaurant.

Hairy crab

Autumn is the perfect season for hairy crab. Yu at The Ritz-Carlton Beijing presents some dishes made with the delicacy until Nov 30. Yu is a modern styled Chinese restaurant serving fine Cantonese cuisine. There is a tea bar with a tea master matching each meal with fine graded teas.

Yum cha on weekdays

The Hong Kong chef at Jewel Chinese restaurant prepares yum cha breakfast from 7-10 am, Monday to Friday. The breakfast features unlimited servings of steamed, fried and baked dim sum, complemented by premium teas or freshly brewed coffee. The meal costs 108 yuan, plus 15 percent per person. Not available on public holidays.

From Oct 1-31, the lobby lounge at China World Hotel offers a selection of its best cafe latte, from Liegeois latte, Tia Maria and maple latte, vanilla and caramel latte to orange essence latte. Savor these warm coffees, and enjoy them to the accompaniment of classical music.

Shanghai

All that jazz

Get set for two nights of sizzling jazz as the Asian Jazz All-Stars Power Quartet rocks The Jazz Bar of Fairmont Peace Hotel on Oct 18 and 19. The quartet comprises four of the most celebrated jazz musicians in Asia: keyboardist Jeremy Monteiro from Singapore, Hong Kong guitarist Eugene Pao, Filipino saxophone virtuoso Tots Tolentino and drummer extraordinaire Chanutr Techatana-nan from Thailand. The All-Stars will perform an eclectic playlist of old and new favorites, spiced with original compositions. The Jazz Bar's own Theo Croker Sextet and the legendary Peace Hotel Old Jazz Band will join this dynamic mini festival of jazz.

Tea Room at Hyatt on the Bund presents its best traditional Shanghai dim sum with hot and iced teas. Indulge in the choice of afternoon tea set dishes such as the famous Shanghai hairy crab roe dumplings, sweetened sago cream with coconut milk, chrysanthemum and pu'er and iced longjing tea with green tea ice cream. The afternoon tea, available on the weekends from Oct 1 till the end of the year, is priced at 128 yuan with 15 percent surcharge per person.
