At least 9 killed in road accident in Bangladesh

DHAKA, Bangladesh- At least nine people were killed and over 100 injured in a tragic road accident at Bangladesh's Sadullapur sub-district of Gaibandha district, 268 km northwest of capital Dhaka, on Thursday morning, official said.

Shahidul Islam, deputy commissioner of Gaibandha district, told Xinhua by phone that a bus coming from northwestern Rangpur district suddenly stopped on the highway at the point due to deep fog. At that time, two other running buses hit this bus from behind.

"Nine bodies were found at the spot and over 100 people injured including 40 in critical condition," he added.

After police were informed, local police rushed in, rescued the injured and sent them to different hospitals for treatment.

Road accident is a common phenomenon in Bangladesh due to violation of traffic rules by inept drivers and lack of monitoring of the traffic department. According to the statistics of the Police Headquarters, as many as 2,958 people were killed in 3,381 road accidents across the country in 2009.
