LOS ANGELES - A high school student in a Los Angeles suburb was wounded Wednesday afternoon, the third school-related shooting in two days.

The 16-year-old Bell High School student was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood at about 3:30 pm (2330 GMT). He had been shot by a man in black at Boulevards Burgers, a popular hamburger stand about half a block from the campus, about nine miles (14 km) south of downtown Los Angeles.

The boy was expected to survive, local police said.

This is the third shooting involving high school students in the greater Los Angeles area in two days.

Earlier in the morning, a Los Angeles Unified School District officer was shot in the chest by a man on the grounds of El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, about 25 miles (40 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles. He was hospitalized in fair condition as he was wearing a protective vest.

The suspect was believed to be armed with a 9 mm semiautomatic weapon, officers said.

The authorities have detained a man at the scene not long after the shooting and questioned several others.

However, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck said the suspect remained at large.

On Tuesday morning, two 15-year-old students from Gardena High School in southern Los Angeles were wounded by a gun brought by a 17-year-old boy into the classroom, which discharged accidentally. The suspect and two others were detained.

Of the two wounded students, the girl, who was shot in the head, woke up Wednesday and showed signs of improvement, and the boy, who was shot in the neck, was in good condition, doctors said.
