PARIS -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy is pushing ahead with a measure to strip naturalized French citizens of their nationality if they are convicted of attacking a law enforcement official.

Sarkozy has stopped short, however, of a suggestion to strip the citizenship of those found guilty of polygamy.

In a statement Monday following a meeting with top ministers, Sarkozy's office said a new proposal would affect "those who threaten the life of a law enforcement official, in particular a police officer."

The proposal will be part of a bill to go before parliament later this month.

Sarkozy initially floated the idea of hardening citizenship rules in July. Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux suggested enlarging it to include those found guilty of polygamy.
