HANGZHOU, Zhejiang - Wang Huizhong, general director of the security project in Zhejiang Province for Shanghai World Expo, Standing Committee of CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee, secretary of Zhejiang Provincial Commission of Politics and Law, Director-General of the Public Security Department of Zhejiang Province, recently received an interview of China Daily Website on the security project in Zhejiang Province for Shanghai World Expo.
Wang said, “Compared with the security work for Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, in this security project we have to face more crucial situation, take more arduous tasks, and therefore work under more pressure. Because Shanghai World Expo will last 184 days, while Beijing Olympic Games only took 17 days.”
As early as in 2008, advocated by central authorities, Shanghai and the six provinces round it, that is Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi and Shandong, signed agreements on cooperation in a security project for Shanghai World Expo. And this security project was called “the Moat round Shanghai”. However, compared with the other five provinces, Zhejiang holds a much more special relationship with Shanghai.
As Wang introduced, It is expected that during the Shanghai World Expo, more than 20 million visitors will come to Zhejiang, while daily traffic volume on main thoroughfares between Shanghai and Zhejiang will reach up to 58,000 vehicles, equal to twice of the usual days. Wang said,” We must take responsibilities for so many people’s traffic safety, and meanwhile we must offer good service to them.”
Early in 2010, a leading group headed by Wang Huizhong was established in Zhejiang province. This group is specialized in the security project for Shanghai World Expo. There are six smaller working groups under it, that is Comprehensive Coordinate Group, Checkpoint Construction Group, Promotion &Licensing Group, Technical Communication Group, Traffic Shunting Group and Security on Water Group. All of the group members come from Zhejiang’s Departments of Public Security, Maritime Safety, Transport and Communications etc, and they will work together during Shanghai World Expo.
Besides personnel set-up, Zhejiang Province has contributed over 200 million yuan to buy high-tech and new anti-terrorist weaponry. For example, the general command of security project in Zhejiang Province for Shanghai World Expo located in Jiaxing city has cost over 2 million yuan for construction.
As to the strictness of security project, Wang mentioned that all of the vehicles and vessels entering Shanghai during the A-level security period have to be checked.
In the end of this interview when Wang was asked “would such a large-scale and strict security project cause inconvenience to the public’s going-out”, he said, “I representing the 60,000 policemen in Zhejiang province makes a commitment that on the premise of 100% ensuring the safety of Shanghai World Expo, we will try our best to satisfy the public’s needs for a normal life. I promise that we will not bother the public.”
