Peking Opera stars, Yu Kuizhi and Li Shengsu, have become the latest celebrities to partner with the Futian district government in promoting culture and sports.
The two signed a memorandum of cooperation with the district government at Futian Conference Hall on Aug 28.
During the signing ceremony, Xiong Guoxiong, Futian's publicity chief, presented the two artists with letters of appointment as cultural consultants.
According to the memorandum, the pair will offer their thoughts and suggestions on the long-term promotion of Peking Opera in Futian district of Shenzhen, Guangdong province.
They will also come to Futian on an annual basis to direct Peking Opera performances and to take part in a series of charity and promotional activities, including exchange meetings, salons and small performances. The plan is part of efforts to promote the inheritance and development of Peking Opera.
In an interview, Yu and Li said: "Revitalizing Peking Opera should start with kids and we will do everything we can to promote the traditional opera in schools. It's our duty to promote the opera in Futian district and across Shenzhen."
At the start of the ceremony, Yu performed two classic pieces of Peking Opera, winning warm applause. Li performed two representative pieces of Meipai style, which was founded by Mei Lanfang, a celebrated Peking Opera artist in modern Chinese theater. The show ended with a joint performance by the two artists.
The Futian government established a special fund in 2012 to link big names in the cultural and athletic fields with the district.
Other celebrities that have signed with the district include piano star Lang Lang, basketball player Yi Jianlian and cultural scholar Wang Luxiang.
Shenzhen Daily provided the story.
