Jenny Choi, a Higher Diploma student in Commercial Design (Jewellery Design and Visual Merchandising) from the School of Continuing Education (SCE), recently clinched the first runner-up award (Student Group) in the 18th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. Her winning piece which magnificently embodies the competition's theme "Follow Your Heart", was previously on display at the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Entitled "Tempting Heart", Jenny's creation is a necklace made of silver, zircon, red garnet and red cubic zirconia. It took two months to create, from design to production, and the inspiration came from her daily life. Jenny said: "The design concept originated from bicycles which give me a sense of freedom as cyclists can roam without constraints. Therefore, many parts of the necklace are movable to convey the idea of freedom brought by cycling." The two circles of the necklace represent the wheels of a bicycle. The smaller circle can move freely and both the small and large circles can be adjusted upward or downward, depending on the wearer's preference.
Jenny said that she was clueless about jewelry production at the beginning. She said: "I want to thank my lecturer Clara Luk who encouraged me to join the competition, and instructor John Chung who helped me identify suitable materials and overcome technical problems. This competition enabled me to realize the importance of cost control and the properties of different materials. The satisfaction derived from producing a jewelry piece is simply beyond words." As a commercial design student, Jenny hopes to continue participating in different kinds of competitions so as to expand her scope of experience. She aspires to become an interior designer or a visual merchandiser in the future.
