The next Chief Executive must not only be able, but also have an affinity for Hong Kong who will be able to govern it well and win broad-based support of the people, according to Jonathan Choi Koon-shum.
More importantly, the new leader should love the country and Hong Kong and rule the city in the best interest of both places, he says, adding it would be a great asset if that person is well known internationally and commands the support of the international community.
"We need a Chief Executive with strong capability to lead the civil service and the cabinet in running Hong Kong, a strong affinity for the people and fine skills to balance the interests of various sectors.
"Regarding the new leader's primary tasks, we think economic development is, among all, the most important goal because only with economic prosperity can we be assured of a better livelihood, stability and harmony in society," Choi says.
As for the person's appetence - regarded as one of the key criteria for any aspirant for the post - Choi reckons it is more important than his or her popularity or someone who always sports a smile on his face, or just sweet talk to please the people.
"What we have in mind is a person with strong affinity who is approachable, willing to listen, responsive and has the cohesive power and skills to govern Hong Kong and balance the interests of various quarters of the community," he says.
"As long as that person meets the requirements of the business community, it does not matter if he or she comes from the business or professional sector or the civil service. We will not comment on individual candidates at this stage until they have declared their candidacy," Choi adds.
