President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge said yesterday that it was the right decision to stage the equestrian events in Hong Kong, and he congratulated the city for its outstanding achievements.

Rogge was speaking at a welcoming reception hosted by the SAR government in honor of his visit yesterday.

Rogge recalled an IOC discussion four years ago, when it was suggested that Hong Kong host the equestrian games. Initially, there were many doubts throughout the equestrian community, he said.

"But now, the doubts have been dispelled, and it was the correct decision to stage the equestrian events in Hong Kong," he said. "What you have achieved is outstanding."

His thanks also went out to the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) and the Hong Kong Jockey Club for their contributions to the events.

Turning his thoughts north to Beijing, he congratulated China for hosting a "fantastic" 2008 Olympics.

He said Olympic delegates have told him the Olympic Village is "the best ever", and the Olympic venues and facilities are very good.

And even those in the media who he said have often criticized him have been satisfied with the outcome in Beijing.

Rogge went to Sha Tin to attend the show jumping event after the reception. His stay will be brief, as he plans on leaving today.
