UN Official: China's progress 'unprecedented'

China has made "unprecedented" progress in achieving the Millennium Development Goals, but many challenges still remain, Khalid Malik, UN Resident Coordinator in China, said on Thursday.

UNDP: Energy-saving bulbs could have huge impact

The idea is simple: replacing regular light bulbs with energy-saving ones. If full implemented, the "Green Lights Project" would help reduce China's energy consumption by 8%.

What China has done in the last two to three decades has been remarkable.

It has lifted some five hundred million people out of poverty. It has made enormous progress on life expectancy, on education status.

There are, at the same time, many challenges, and there are also some additional challenges which are arising as a result of this fast growth.

China is not only active in energy conservation, but..is now becoming a world leader in wind energy, solar energy.

It's a great privilege to be here in China. For me, this has been a remarkable opportunity.

Chinese people are among the most hard-working people I have come across.
