Guangdong to build world's largest garbage treatment project
[ 2005-04-21 08:43:19]

A multiple-functional garbage treatment project is expected to be built and go into operation in Guangzhou, capital city of south China's Guangdong Province, by the end of 2006.

Costing 320 million yuan (38.69 million US dollars), the Likeng Domestic Garbage Treatment Project, is the first garbage treatment project in Guangdong which has the functions of sorting out garbage, anaerobic fermenting and generating electricity with methane gas, said Lu Zhiyi, director of the Guangzhou Urban Outlook and Environmental Protection Administration.

The project has a disposing capacity of 1,000 tons daily, larger than the daily disposing capacity of 600 tons of the currently world's largest multiple-functional garbage treatment project in Spain.

Lu said, Likeng multiple-functional garbage treatment project isone of the seven garbage treatment facilities scheduled to be built in Guangzhou before 2010, at a cost of 5 billion yuan (about600 million US dollars).

Also among the seven projects is the Likeng Garbage-burning Power Plant, which is now under smooth construction.

Lu said, the No. 1 power plant, which burns 1,000 tons of domestic garbage daily, is expected to become operational in the second half of this year. The No. 2 power plant, which burns 2,000tons garbage daily, will go into operation by the end of 2007 and the third one is expected to be completed before 2010, burning 3,000 tons of garbage daily.
