Anna Sui has been on a winning streak in her recent collections, with their divine color combinations and prints. The collection she showed on Wednesday might for New York Fashion Week have been a day late, but it was still so sweet it could have been a valentine.
She started with a denim shearling cape (fake shearling, actually) and ended with a wild pair of velvet caftans.
In between there were piles of teal satin jacquards and merlot velvet with whimsical embellishments and prints, some showing love letters, all on models who smiled. They really smiled. One plaid dress was embroidered with a jeweled unicorn, but best yet were the owl-shaped knit hats made for Ms. Sui by the designer James Coviello.
Backstage, Ms. Sui said she had been looking at the commercial artists Naiad and Walter Einsel and wound up touring their house while she was designing the collections. She was moved by the handmade valentines the couple created for each other, which have been published in a book called "Art From the Heart."
"I just thought it was an incredible love story," Ms. Sui said.
