Determination to solve problems

Premier Wen Jiabao's straightforward acknowledgment of problems indicates his government's resolve to solve them, says a signed article in Beijing Youth Daily. An excerpt follows:
When asked by a reporter what has grieved him most during his three year term at a press conference at the end of the National People's Congress sessions, Premier Wen Jiabao said it was the government's failure to better solve such problems as healthcare, education, housing, and work safety, issues that concern ordinary people.
The earnestness and straightforwardness in his reply is the premier's reflection on the work his government has done in the past years.
Ordinary people's difficulties in seeing doctors, paying for children's education, and buying houses have become a prevailing topic among deputies and members of the just-concluded NPC and CPPCC sessions.
That the livelihood problems were heatedly debated and severely concerned the premier is a symbol of the government's deep-rooted principle of governing for the people.
During the two sessions, different proposals and solutions were presented to help settle the problems that have long plagued ordinary people.
It is impractical and unrealistic, however, to expect that effective prescriptions can be made during the sessions alone.
All the remarks by officials from the ministries of education, public health, construction and finance mean that these thorny problems still need time to be resolved.
However, the concentrated attention to the issues related with people's livelihoods among the country's legislators and advisors and the premier's concern will surely develop into a driving force compelling the government to work harder.
No matter how many and what difficulties lie ahead, issues concerning ordinary people should be put on the top of government agendas.
The premier's reply transmits the country's top leadership's determination to solve grass-roots hardships.
