A few thousand tops at Pearl Harbor

The nature of the beast is that the authenticated number of dead in Nanjing alone is 300,000. One crucial piece of evidence was a telegram sent from the top Japanese commander from the Nanjing area to the headquarters in Japan intercepted by the Americans.
Lack of acknowledgement of this atrocity and the unwillingness of the Koizumi government to put an apology in writing are the poignant reasons the ordinary Chinese people feel so strongly about the issues.
It's not that the Chinese do not want to forgive the Japanese. It is that the Japanese do not want themselves to be forgiven. They are preparing to embark on neo-Samuraiism. As you can see, there are even Japan apologists in this forum with Chinese-sounding names who wouldn't come out and say categorically that Japan needs to apologize in writing for the atrocities so that there will be no more recurrences.
See my article on "Sleeping with the Japanese with a cocked gun under the pillow" in the World Conflict Forum for more details.
