和汉语一样，英语中以heart组成的短语很多，并且在日常生活中的使用频率也很高，如 lose heart（丧失信心），lose one's heart to somebody / something（喜欢上某人或某物），learn by heart（记住），heart of gold（美好的心灵），break one's heart（伤心），do sb.'s heart good（使某人高兴），have one's heart in the right place（心地善良），have one's heart in one's boots（非常惊恐；非常紧张），in one's heart of hearts（在内心深处），lose one's heart to（倾心于……），set one's heart on sth.（决心得到某物），take to heart（认真关注；对……想不开），with all one's heart（真心诚意地）等等。
在人类社会的早期，由于科学相对落后，人们对于自身的认识也存在很大的局限性，他们普遍认为心脏是人体的思维器官，因此heart一词多与人的思想情绪有关。而且很多短语在长期的使用过程中，其含意也发生了较大的变化，有些甚至与其字面含意相去甚远。After one’s own heart的英文释义为：well liked because of agreeing with your own feelings, interests and ideas，不难看出，它是一个形容词短语，多置于名词之后作后置修饰语。在汉语中大致可以翻译为“情投意合的；意趣相投的；两情相悦的；正中下怀的”等。
例如：
Lucy and Richard have worked in the same office for so many years. She has long admired Richard as the man after her own heart.
露西和理查德在同一办公室共事多年了。她一直把理查德视为知己。
