Li Keng rubbish treatment center, said to be the largest in the world, will start construction soon in Guangzhou.

The 320-million-yuan (US$38.7 million) project will be finished by the end of next year.

The rubbish center would handle 1,000 tons of rubbish a day upon completion, according to an agreement signed by Guangzhou Municipal Government and Hong Kong Asia-Pacific Environment Protection Co. Ltd on Monday.

The company's Hong Kong subsidiary, Guangzhou Jiannasi Environment Protection and Energy Co. Ltd would build, operate and transfer rubbish to the plant.

The plant will introduce advanced rubbish assortment equipment, anaerobic technology and power generation facilities.

Guangzhou will invest 5 billion yuan to establish seven rubbish incineration plants by the year 2010, according to Li Zhiyi, general director of Guangzhou Municipal Environment Sanitation Bureau at the agreement-signing ceremony.
