The nation's first metropolitan map pinpointing hospitals and listing their services became available in Shanghai yesterday.
The locations of some 200 hospitals are identified on the map, including all city- and district-based hospitals and some private clinics. The specialties of each medical center also are listed, along with its address, a brief introduction and telephone numbers.
The map is being sold for 5 yuan (60 US cents) at the Shanghai Xinhua Book Store. So far, there is only a Chinese version.
The project was carried out by the Shanghai Institute of Surveying and Mapping, Shanghai Legreen Advertising Co and the local branch of the Chinese Medical Association.
Medical officials said there are 700 to 800 hospitals in Shanghai, the greatest concentration in the country.
"Without a proper understanding of local medical resources, it is difficult to find a suitable hospital or doctor," said Zhu Yanmiao, vice director of the medical association.
Hospital officials also praised the map, saying it will help thwart the touts who linger outside hospitals to exploit patients.
"These people are cheating patients by taking them to illegal clinics. Many patients not only suffer financial loss but also miss getting the proper treatment," said Wang Lingyuan, vice president of Changhai Hospital.
Local residents also were pleased with the map.
"I will feel more confident about going to the right hospital, " said retiree Wang Ying.
