Israeli soldiers shot three Palestinians, critically wounding two of them, during a raid in the northern West Bank city of Nablus on Tuesday, Palestinian medics and security sources said.

Soldiers shot three stonethrowers during the clashes in the southern part of Nablus during the raid, apparently to arrest wanted militants, they said.

The Israeli army declined immediate comment. A spokeswoman said she was checking the report.

Military sources said two Israeli soldiers were lightly hurt from an explosive device thrown by Palestinians during the raid. They said Palestinian gunmen also opened fire several times at the troops.

The Israeli army regularly raids Nablus, a bastion for militants behind suicide bomb attacks.
