Schwarzenegger discusses energy in China

Schwarzenegger and a 79-member delegation are on a mission to promote California products and encourage Chinese officials to crack down on rampant piracy of intellectual property — from movies and music to pharmaceuticals, wine and designer apparel.

California is the major gateway for U.S. trade to China, with cotton and computer-related products leading the way. The state exported $6.8 billion in goods to China in 2004, double what it exported in 2000, according to the California Chamber of Commerce.

As he has in the past, Schwarzenegger called for more hydrogen-powered cars and said he hoped 20 percent of California's energy needs would be met by renewable energy by 2020.

"China and California face the same challenges — providing clean, abundant, reliable, affordable energy that will sustain our economies and our environment," Schwarzenegger said.

He praised the solar chip — designed by SunPower Corp. in Sunnyvale and manufactured in China — as "an amazing China-California success story" that had great potential in both countries.

"This is the future, ladies and gentlemen," Schwarzenegger said, hoisting the chip as cameras whirred.
