Jiangsu Province in east China, one of the country's economic powerhouses, is expected to meet the target of turning it into a better-off society in an all round way by the year 2010, with the per capita gross domestic product (GDP)rising to 5,000 US dollars.

The objective was set at the ninth plenary session of the 10th Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC)held in Nanjing, the provincial capital, last Friday.

While elaborating proposals to the 11th five-year-program period (2006-2010), Liang Baohua, governor of Jiangsu, predicted Jiangsu would embark on a new phase of development by the end of 2005, the last year of the tenth five-year-plan period (2000-2005),with the per capita GDP reaching about 3,000 US dollars.

Jiangsu will notch approximately 1.8 trillion yuan (221.95 billion US dollars) in GDP by the end of the year, up 83 percent from the relevant statistics when the ninth five-year-plan period was finished, while gross revenue will exceed 300 billion yuan (about 36.99 billion US dollars), according to Jiang.

In the meantime, per-capita disposable income for urban residents and per-capita net income of farmers will rise to 12,000 yuan and 5,100 yuan, an increase of 5,200 yuan and 1,500 yuan, respectively.

The province will raked in 220 billion US dollars in foreign trade and attain over 50 percent in urbanization by the end of the year, Liang said.
