MACAO, October 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Taipei handed a 79-56 defeat to favored China in the women's basketball preliminary round at the East Asian Games on Monday.
Li Yangguang, who led women's team of China to a silver medal at the 1992 Olympic Games, faces his first blow after being nominated head coach 15 days before the East Asian Games. |
China, which held off a late surge by Japan to survive 73-72 on Sunday, took the first quarter 26-20 but only scored 11 points against Chinese Taipei's 22 in the second.
China only managed five points while Chinese Taipei nabbed 23 in the third quarter.
After a 14-14 fourth quarter, Chinese Taipei clinched its second straight win after Sunday's 96-63 demolition of DPR Korea, which lost its second game on Monday, conceding to South Korea 72- 62.
Chinese coach Li Yaguang blamed their shock defeat on too many fouls and poor teamwork.
"Two of our key players each had four fouls by halftime, so we lost composure after that," said Li, who took over the team just a week ago.
"We didn't play our normal game," he added.
Bian Lan scored a game high 16 points for China and Lan Jui-yu was Chinese Taipei's top scorer with 14 points.
