S.Korea end 15-year winless record to beat China 2-0

For 27 years, South Korea's men's team never lost a single game to China's, but their women's team, on the contrary, never won a single game against China for 15 years. The latter record was broken yesterday.

Han Jin-sook of South Korea Monday scored off a penalty kick 42 minutes into first half, to give her team a lead over the Chinese women's team. Park Eun-sun solidified that into a win, scoring a goal 19 minutes into the second half, to lead her team to a victory over China.

Four national women's teams from South Korea, North Korea, Japan and China are competing for US$50,000 in first prize. They are competing alongside four national men's team from the same countries. The first prize for the East Asian Football Federation Championship, the men's game, is US$500,000.

With Monday's win, South Korea women's soccer team have defeated the Chinese women's team for the first time in 15 years, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported.

Ri Un Suk of North Korea on Monday shot a goal 38 minutes into the first half of the East Asian Football Federation Women's Cup match, to which her team held on to clinch a 1-0 victory over Japanese women's soccer team.

Kozue Ando and Hiromi Isozaki of Japan each unsuccessfully attempted to score 15 minutes, 28 minutes into the second half at the match held at Jeonju World Cup Stadium, 243 kilometers south of Seoul.

The North Korean women's team was matched by their South Korean counterparts, who beat China by 2-0, in an earlier match played at the same stadium.

The two Korean women's team will compete on Thursday.
