The Xinjiang Ugur Autonomous Region pledged Tuesday to let intellectual property play a bigger role in promoting the Northwest China region's social and economic development.

The region will do more IPR-related works, increase the financial and personnel input in the IPR sector and beef up IPR protection, said Liu Yi, vice-chairman of the autonomous regional government at a press conference held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Liu said that his region has attached great importance to IPR-related works, has established an IPR network of management, administration, law-enforcement and service, and has issued a series of regulations in this field.

Tian Lipu, director of the State Intellectual Property Office, promised more attention to, personnel and financial support for Xinjiang, bringing intellectual property into greater play in the harmonious social and economic development in the region.

Urumqi, capital city of the region, will promote IPR technology innovation, step up IPR protection and endeavor to develop a number of core technologies with self-owned IPR, said Mayor Shokrat Zakir.

Xinjiang has decided to speed up the integration of Urumqi and neighboring Changji Prefecture, hoping that the Urumqi-Changji belt can drive the development of the whole region, Shokrat Zakir said.

He expressed the hope that intellectual property can provide strong support for the sustainable development of the belt.

During the press conference, the Urumqi government signed an agreement on long-term technological co-operation with the Capital Technology Group, established by more than 100 scientific research institutions, universities and colleges.

"Report on the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Protection in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 2004" was released at the press conference.
