A news story about Liu Xiang winning the historical 110m hurdles gold medal at the Athens Olympics has been added to a Chinese text book for fifth grade students in Shanghai.

A first batch of about 40 primary schools has adopted the textbooks and it is reported all primary schools in the city will do so in the future.

The new textbooks have been approved by educational experts, who examined the content of the books before they were printed and handed to the students.

This action has drawn hot discussion on whether a “living hero” should be written in textbooks.

Shanghai education officials support the new textbooks while some experts say it may be an unbearable burden for Liu Xiang.

One school teacher says he and his students were astonished to see Liu Xiang's photo on the new textbooks.
