Migrant birds monitoring stations operated in Henan

ZHENGZHOU -- Amid worldwide alarm of bird flu, central China's Henan Province has put all its eight surveillance stations into operation to monitor local and inbound migrant birds.

There was so far no report of unusual information, according to the wildlife protection office under Henan Provincial Forestry Department.

Parts of Henan are important routes for birds to migrate southwards and northwards. In every Spring and Summer, migrant birds come here from the south for reproduction, while in Winter, migrant birds in frigid northern China come to this mild region to live through winter. It makes wildlife epidemic prevention more challenging in the province, according to the office.

The provincial Forestry Department has set up eight surveillance stations since last April and worked out a special plan to tackle major wildlife epidemics that might occur in the province. The eight surveillance stations had been asked to map out emergency plans to ensure the information can be reported timely in case any epidemic occurs.

After the eight stations were put on alert, staffs in these stations were asked to record the species of migrant birds and the time and route of their movement every day, according to the office.
