The Xinjiang Telecom Company Ltd is playing an important role in the development of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The company, established in July 2000, has invested more than 10 billion yuan (US$1.2 billion) in constructing telecom infrastructure, greatly improving the scale, reliability and security of local telecom networks.

It is always ready to use the newest technology to upgrade the fixed-line telephone, mobile phone and Internet networks.

Xinjiang lags behind most other provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in economic development, but its telecom factor is above the national average level, company officials said.

The company endeavors to push the region into the age of information, and helps local governments to build an e-government, and offers aid to local companies in e-commerce.

It also provides free training programs on Internet usage to local residents and netizens. With the numbers of phone and Internet users continuing to increase, the company is sure to play an even more important role in the region's development.
