Economic ties between the mainland and Taiwan have witnessed robust growth over the past year. Trade volume between the two sides rose over 30 percent to 1.6 billion US dollars in 2004.

The mainland is Taiwan's largest export market, as well as its leading investment destination. The mainland accounted for 18 percent of Taiwan's total trade last year. In the meantime, Taiwan farmers have been attracted to the central government's preferential policies aimed at giving them greater access to the mainland market. Taiwan's agribusiness has suffered from declining sales due to limited demand on the island, and the mainland now offers many new opportunities.
