Sixth-seeded Dominik Hrbaty lost 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 to Russia's Mikhail Youzhny. Seventh-seeded Radek Stepanek, who won the Rotterdam title last week, defeated John van Lottum of the Netherlands 6-3, 7-6 (6).

Eighth-seeded Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic scored a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Christophe Rochus of Belgium. Bjorn Phau of Germany beat Giorgio Galimberti of Italy 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 to earn a second-round match against Andre Agassi.
