Gasol shocked by All-Star squad call up (Reuters) Updated: 2006-02-12 10:47
MADRID (Reuters) - Memphis Grizzlies forward Pau Gasol is still in a state of
shock after becoming the first Spaniard to be included in the NBA All-Star squad
earlier this week.
The 25-year-old former Barcelona player was named as a reserve for the
Western Conference team whose starting line-up is made up of Kobe Bryant, Steve
Nash, Tim Duncan, Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming.
"This is a dream come true and a real honor and a privilege for me," Gasol
was quoted as saying in the Spanish media on Saturday.
"I'm still in shock to be honest. The best players will be in this game and
it's a massive recognition for me. It's the biggest thing you can achieve at a
world level in basketball.
"Not long ago I was just starting out in the game and I never imagined
something like this could happen ... I will just try and enjoy it, concentrate
hard and try not to get overcome by the emotion."
Gasol was the third overall pick in the 2001 draft and became the first
European to claim the Rookie of the Year honor in April 2002.
The All-Star Game takes place in February 19 in Houston.
The Eastern Conference starters are Shaquille O'Neal, Dwyane Wade, Lebron
James, Jermaine O'Neal and Allen Iverson.
