Russia, China against imposing sanctions on Iran

Russia and China believe international sanctions shouldn’t be imposed on Iran and voted exclusively for informing the U.N. Security Council about Iran’s “nuclear dossier”, the Iranian radio quoted Gholamreza Aghazadeh, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, as saying on Sunday.

He said Russia and China had pursued their own interests and that their motives were different from those of the United States and Western countries.

Mr. Aghazadeh said it was important that Russia and China disagreed with the idea to impose sanctions on Iran and voted only for the need to report to the U.N. Security Council on Iran’s “nuclear dossier”.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) governing board on Saturday passed a resolution on Iranian nuclear program under which the U.N. Security Council should be informed about urgent steps that Iran should take to remove concerns with regards to the military nature of its nuclear program. Twenty-seven countries, including Russia, supported this resolution. Venezuela, Cuba and Syria voted against sanctions against Iran, while Algeria, Belarus, Libya, Indonesia and South Africa abstained from voting.
