A chronology of some of the worst shipping disasters:

Dec 20, 1987 - the Philippines - In the worst peacetime sea tragedy, the ferry Dona Paz sank after colliding with the tanker Vector in the Sibuyan Sea. 4,375 people died on the ferry.

Oct 24, 1988 - the Philippines - Dona Marilyn, sister ship of Dona Paz, sank off Leyte province, killing 250.

Dec 27, 1988 - Bangladesh - At least 200 died when the ferry Haisal sank on the River Dhaleswari after being rammed by a cargo vessel.

Dec 15, 1991 - Egypt - 464 people were killed when the Salem Express hit coral outside the Red Sea port of Safaga.

Feb 17, 1993 - Haiti - Passenger ferry Neptune with 800-2,000 aboard sank off Petit Goave. Several hundred people drowned.

July 2, 1993 - the Philippines - 279 pilgrims drowned when a floating pagoda collapsed during a religious festival on the Bocaue river.

Oct 10, 1993 - South Korea - The Seohae ferry, overloaded with 362 people, capsized off Puan county killing 292.
