Teen pregnancies demand answers (CRIENGLISH) Updated: 2006-02-01 13:31 The Shanghai Daily has run a
startling story about a 19-year-old woman who has smothered her 4-day-old
daughter.
The mother, Lin Zhen, has told a court she killed the child of her former
boyfriend because the infant complicated her relationship with her current
lover, the newspaper reports.
What's worse, Lin is not the only cold-blooded mother out there. Last year
saw several reports of teenagers throwing their newborn babies out of windows.
The public has been discussing teenage pregnancy and its related problems for
years. But where are the answers?
A 2005 global sex survey has found Chinese teenagers to be the most
irresponsible pleasure seekers among their peers worldwide, with an unplanned
pregnancy rate three times the global average.
Seems shocking, doesn't it? Insufficient education is always the problem in
China where parents and schools are not always open to talking to teenagers
about the do's and don'ts of sex-related issues. The situation is now becoming
worse as teenagers behave irresponsibly and sometimes even commit crimes.
