Ma urges recruitment of mainland studnets (CNA) Updated: 2006-01-27 09:02
Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Ma Ying-jeou said Thursday that Taiwan
should consider allowing mainland's high school graduates to study in
Taiwan's universities and colleges.
Ma, who is also Taipei mayor, told CNA in an interview that the measure
should be introduced.
He said allowing mainland's students to study in Taiwan's universities
would enable them to more understand Taiwan and would be conducive to peace
between across the Strait.
According to Ma, another reason for his suggestion is that Taiwan's 160
universities and colleges would benefit from the measure because at present they
do not have enough students to fill their vacancies.
Ma noted that a growing number of Taiwanese students are pursuing higher
education in mainland each year.
The policy needs to be changed because "it will not do any good for Taiwan,"
he said.
According to figures released by the mainland, more than 5,000 Taiwanese
students are studying in China's universities and colleges. An estimated 12,000
Taiwanese students have graduated from mainland's universities and colleges
in the past years.
