An overcrowded bus plunged into a deep gorge in Indian Kashmir on Friday, killing about 50 people and injuring 15 others, a senior police official said.

The accident occurred as the driver negotiated a bend on the road to Rajouri, 170 km (110 miles) north of Jammu, the winter capital of Indian Kashmir.

"So far we have reports of 50 dead and 15 critically injured," police officer Manmohan Singh told Reuters.
