Cloning pioneer or con man?: South Korean stem cell expert Hwang Woo-suk and his team in May claimed in a paper published in the journal Science to have cloned a human embryo, and in August, Hwang announced that his team of researchers had become the first to clone a dog.
But the year ended with Hwang's fall from grace, with his resignation as a professor at Seoul National University and an investigation finding that there was no evidence to corroborate his claims of human cloning.
