college arrived in Beijing December 27, 2005 to do their vation job as
housemaids. [Beijing Times] | These college
girls are mostly juniors and sophomores, majoring in journalism, the Chinese
language and secretarial profession, according to sources of the organizer, a
Sichuan-based household service agency.
"Nine of them were hired shortly after they arrived on Tuesday morning. After
a short training, they will start working on Thursday," said a manager surnamed
Liu with Beijing Anjishun Domestic Work Company, which is a co-organizer of this
"baby-sitter group."
These girls, aged from 18 to 22, had received a one-week-long training
on domestic works before their arrival. Most of them have also mastered the
basic knowledge of English, computer and tutoring.
"Their salary will be 800 to 1,000 yuan (US$123) per month, much higher than
the average baby-sitter's 600 yuan (US$74) a month," said Liu.
"I can fully manage the daily housework, though I am not sure of my cooking
skills," said 18-year-old Yu Wei, the youngest one among the 33 college girls.
"I consider this experience as a taste of the society and I wish to broaden my
horizon during my stay in Beijing so as to land a decent job after graduation."
All the girls are organized on a voluntary basis and under their parents'
permission, according to Tan Guoying, head of the Chinese language department of
the vocational college.
Part-time jobs will not cause their credits suffer. They can finish the
required credit hours within five years while working, said the dean.
Early this year, it was reported 37 college girls from
central China's Wuhan City came to baby-sit in Beijing. But eight months later,
most of them quit except ten.
