A Christmas Day fire in a bar in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong has killed 26 people and left eight others injured.

All of the wounded are hospitalized.

Xinhua news agency reported the fire occurred around 11:00pm Sunday night in Tanzhou township in the prosperous city of Zhongshan.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

China's Ministry of Public Security said last week that 222,000 accidental fires occurred across the country from January to November, killing a total of 2,048 people and injuring 2,080 others.
