European Union trade chief Peter Mandelson said on Friday there was no clear basis for negotiations at a world trade meeting in Hong Kong and it was hard to see progress if the talks continued as they have so far.

"There are a variety of different textual situations on the table but no reconciliation of these as yet and no clear basis for negotiations, either," the European trade commissioner told a news conference on the fourth day of World Trade Organisation talks.

"It is hard to see how progress can be made in Hong Kong if talks continue in the current direction," he added.
