FRANCE

Olympique Lyon extended their lead at the top of Ligue 1 to 12 points by holding arch rivals St Etienne to a 0-0 draw at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Sunday.

The four times champions, who have 44 points from 18 games, remain the only unbeaten side in the major European leagues this season but failed to score for the first time this term.

Second-placed Auxerre lost 1-0 at Olympique Marseille on Saturday while Girondins Bordeaux, a further point back in third, were beaten 1-0 at Le Mans.

Paris St Germain moved into fourth place after two-goal Pauleta gave them a 2-0 home win over Stade Rennes.

NETHERLANDS

AZ Alkmaar lead a three-way tie at the top of the first division following a 3-1 win at Twente Enschede on Saturday.

Second-half goals by Stein Huysegems, Danny Koevermans and Denny Landzaat steered Alkmaar to victory after they trailed to a first-half own goal from Martijn Meerdink.

After 15 matches, AZ, Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven all have 35 points. Feyenoord beat PSV 1-0 on Sunday thanks to a seventh-minute goal from Dirk Kuijt.
