The hospital is treating about 100 who were injured on Saturday.

Ruichang People's Hospital, with makeshift tents and plastic shelters serving as wards, is treating dozens of injured but was bursting at the seams, local media reported.

Eight babies were delivered safely in the hospital in the last two days.

About 6,300 tents yesterday reached Ruichang and Jiujiang, which were near the epicentre; and 1,500 more were on their way from Hubei, said Liu Yongfa, an official with the Ministry of Civil Affairs in charge of disaster.

Zhang Xiao, a Ruichang resident whose two-storey house was damaged, has to share a tent with his neighbours because of the limited number.

"Children and the elderly get priority," said Zhang, as local government officials said more tents were needed.

Residents also received instant noodles, cakes, milk and bottled mineral water.

Around 18,000 buildings collapsed and 150,000 buildings were damaged in Ruichang and Jiujiang, according to the Jiangxi Civil Affairs Bureau. The direct economic loss amounts to 1 billion yuan (US$123 million), it said.
