"Roma played well in the first half, they got the ball forward quickly but we got into the game and started to play the way we wanted and that changed the game," said Capello, who was full of praise for his striker Trezeguet.

"He's deadly in the area, both with his head and with his feet. He is always there at the right time -- he really is a great player."

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said: "We certainly could have done better and indeed in the first half we actually were better than them.

"The goal before the break was a psychological blow and after the second they got it became very tough. They had the edge over us in the individual battles."

Earlier, Brazilian defender Felipe headed an 87th-minute winner for Udinese to beat Messina 1-0.

Udinese had by far the better of the game but were foiled by the outstanding form of Messina keeper Marco Storari who made several excellent saves.

Just after the break, Storari pushed an Antonio Di Natale effort wide and from the resulting corner pulled off a great save to deny Sulley Muntari.

Ghanaian Muntari then struck the bar with a thundering drive before Storari was at full stretch again to deny Di Natale.

With just three minutes remaining, Udinese gained their just reward when Felipe rose to head in a corner for his first goal in Serie A.
