"The masses have held him in high esteem."
Hu never received higher education, but he always stressed the importance of
knowledge and intellectuals for a modern China.
"Without intellectuals," he once said, "we could not achieve the four
modernizations in industry, agriculture, national defence and science and
technology."
Zeng called on all Party members to learn from Hu's merits of "caring for the
overall situation and frankness."
He also praised Hu for safeguarding interests of the Party and the people.
"Hu maintained close ties with the masses, and was concerned about their
suffering...He personally handled a lot of letters from the public, and tried
his best to help them solve their difficulties. He has set an example of serving
the people wholeheartedly," Zeng said.
About 350 senior officials and celebrities, including Hu's relatives,
attended the commemoration.
