Tiger Woods will play in next year's Dubai Desert Classic, a tournament he has failed in two attempts to win.

The February 2-5 tournament on the Majlis Course at the Emirates Golf Club is regarded as one of the flagship events on the European tour.

"I always enjoy visiting Dubai," Woods said. "It's an extremely hospitable place where the people and the tournament organizers treat the players so well. It's a great venue, the course is always in immaculate condition and the weather reminds me of back home in Florida."

The European tour announced Monday that Woods will be in the 120-player field with prize money boosted by $US200,000 (euro168,000) to US$2.4 million (euro2 million).

"Having the world's greatest golfer play in your event is something many tournaments dream of," tournament chairman Mohamed Alabbar said.

Woods lost to Thomas Bjorn on the final hole of the 2001 tournament and tied for fifth in 2004 behind Florida friend Mark O'Meara.
