Gold Medallist Xing fouls up winning chance By Fang Xuan (Chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2005-10-20 16:14
Olympic gold medalist Xing Huina is in the sports headlines again, but for
all the wrong reasons: her victory in the women's 1500-meter race at the 10th
National Games was annulled in Nanjing Wednesday.

finish line. | A three-person sports arbitration
committee Wednesday announced Xing's medal had been taken from her, two hours
after the match, because officials said she fouled during a dash toward the
finish line.
It's the second time Xing was involved in a medal dispute in just three
days. On Monday, Xing was embarrassed after her coach admitted, according
to some report, that the Women’s 10,000-meter race had been fixed.
Sun Yingjie, Xing's teammate who already bagged in a marathon medal a day
before, led the 10,000 match-up for most of the time until being surpassed by
Xing in the last lap. The strategy was designed to save energy for later
matches.
Neither Xing's coach nor the games' officials would later admit that
match-fixing had gone on, but reporters said they "wrote what they had
heard." However, the reporters could not provide any audio recording of
what the coach's original words were.
