Olympic champion Liu Xiang heads back to school
He's got the Olympic gold. Now Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang is targeting another honor _ Doctor of sports management.
Liu signed up this week for the five-year graduate program at Shanghai's East China Normal University's sports studies institute, aiming first for a master's degree, then a doctorate, newspapers reported. "Liu told me he wanted to pursue becoming an international sports official on the basis of his practical experience as an athlete," Liu's graduate instructor Li Liu was quoted as saying by the Shanghai Morning Post newspaper. "For that he just needs to study a few of the professional theories," Li said. By heading back to school, Liu is following in the steps of another Chinese sports star, two-time Olympic table tennis champion Deng Yaping, who is studying at England's Cambridge University for a sports management doctorate. Liu has emerged as one of China's most popular sporting icons since his victory at Athens, and Tuesday was named an image ambassador for his hometown, Shanghai, along with Houston Rockets center Yao Ming. Despite attempts to keep his presence a secret, Liu was met by a throng of screaming fans and reporters on Wednesday's sign-up day. Liu is a recent graduate of the university's department of politics and law. His new classmates shouldn't expect to see him hanging around campus too much, though. Arrangements have been made for Li and other instructors to tutor and test Liu at his training base in the Shanghai suburb of Xingzhuang, the reports said.
