Yankees edge Orioles to take AL East lead
NEW YORK, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Alex Rodriguez slammed a milestone home run and Shawn Chacon delivered on the mound for the New York Yankees in a 2-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Wednesday to reclaim top spot in the AL East.
The division title will now be decided by a mouth-watering three-game series between New York and the defending World Series champions Boston starting on Friday at Fenway Park. While the Red Sox slipped from the top of the AL East they did not lose any ground in the wild card race, where they remained tied with the Cleveland Indians, who continued their late season collapse with a 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. A day after pounding the Yankees into submission 17-9, the Orioles were quickly back out in front, taking a 1-0 lead on Javy Lopez's solo shot to deep left. The Yankees finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth when Rodriguez took Daniel Cabrera over the wall in right centre for his 47th homer of the season breaking Joe DiMaggio's single-season team record for most home runs by a right-handed batter set in 1937. The next inning, Derek Jeter singled to right to bring across Jorge Posada with the go-ahead run.
